How to disabel the Microsoft Search Service

Hi everybody,

I work with SQL Server 2000 SP2 in an Active/active Cluster.
Two days ago, one the sql server fulltext resource of one node just failed suddenly.
Now I am realizing that Search Engine Utility has not been used by any of my databases, so I would like do disable this service...
Does anybody know how can I get rid of the Microsoft Search Service.
I don't need this service active!
In Service Manager the Microsoft Search is in an unkown state.
In cluster Administrator the sql server full text resource is in a failed state.
Do I need to delete the full text resource or is there any other way to disable the Search Service?
Any help or advice will be very important to me...

Can you take off-line on SQL Server FullText resources from all SQL Server instances from cluster administrator?

You shouldn't remove the search service even though you currently do not use it. Try take it off-line.

Becuase your search service is in unknow status, I would move all cluster groups to the good node and restart the machine that search service is not function properly.|||Hi Allen_Cui

I have already tried to move all the groups to the good node and the result was:
Microsoft Search is in "stopped" state in Service Manager... -> that's ok!
SQL Server Full Text resource was in "failed" state in cluster Administrator... -> that's not ok!
But before I try the manual failover I selected the option "Do not restart" in the properties of the failed Full Text Resource...
My problem now is: I want to convert the state of the failed Full Text Resource to an offline state the is more pleasant to see...
Do you have any idea?

How to determine a physical node name with a sql cluster?

I am trying to determine what physical node my sql server cluster is running
on from within SQL Server. How can I do that?
For example. In query analyzer
select @.@.servername
- returns the virtual name.
Select CONVERT(Varchar(25), SERVERPROPERTY('machinename'))
- returns the virtual name.

How to detect if SQL Reporting Services is installed ?

From an ASP.Net application I need to detect if on a given node, Repoting
services is installed and if so, which version. Does anyone know a stored
procedure or a Web Services API to do this ?

There are a couple ways to determine RS version:
1) Check the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Reporting Services\Version
2) Use the webservice API like this:
For RS 2000:
ReportingService rs1 = new ReportingService();
rs1.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
rs1.ServerInfoHeaderValue = new ServerInfoHeader();
rs1.ListChildren("/", false);
Console.WriteLine(rs1.ServerInfoHeaderValue.ReportServerEdition);
Console.WriteLine(rs1.ServerInfoHeaderValue.ReportServerVersionNumber);
For RS 2005:
ReportingService2005 rs = new ReportingService2005();
rs.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
rs.ServerInfoHeaderValue = new ServerInfoHeader();
rs.ListChildren("/", false);
Console.WriteLine(rs.ServerInfoHeaderValue.ReportServerVersion);
Console.WriteLine(rs.ServerInfoHeaderValue.ReportServerEdition);

Note that there is a new property in 2005, "ReportServerVersion". Also be
aware that ReportServerVersionNumber returns differntly formatted values
for 2000 and 2005.

I have started using the #1 to read the registry. But my requirement is that
I need to be able to detect RS and its version on local and remote machines,
including ones behind firewall. Reading Registry in these secanrios leads to
lot of security issues. Further, I also need to detect if RS is currently
running, I need this to enable a button to launch Report Builder.
Using the RS2005 Web Services seems to be a better approach. Do you know of
an API to also detect if Report Services is currently running ? Do you know
what happens if Report Services is not installed on a remote machine but we
try to call a Web Service ?
